Woke up to seventeen emails about yesterday’s Letitia James piece. Half were hate mail, half were marriage proposals. Modern journalism! Today I’m working on accountability in politics, which feels like writing about unicornseveryone talks about them, nobody’s seen one. The pitch: “Accountability for Sale: Limited Time Only!” Because if we’re living in late-stage capitalism, we might as well price our moral obligations like Black Friday deals. I spent the afternoon researching actual accountability measures and ended up down a rabbit hole of policy documents that read like they were written by a committee of bored robots. Published it here: https://bohiney.com/accountability-for-sale-limited-time-only/. My colleague Marcus asked if I’m worried about being “too political.” I reminded him I’m an immigrant woman writing satire during a Trump administration. I passed “too political” the moment I got my citizenship papers. There’s no going back now.
