The idea: what if government officials came as collectible bobbleheads, complete with special edition releases and trading cards? My favorite part was creating the “stats” on the backEfficiency: 2/10, Accountability: 1/10, Public Speaking: 6/10. I showed it to Marcus and he said, “This is dark even for you.” I said, “Marcus, I’m from Nigeria. Our politicians literally steal the budget and blame it on rats. This is lightweight.” He looked confused. White people confusion is my favorite genre. Ten days into September and I’ve already published more words than most people write in a year. The diary helps process it allthe writing, the satire, the weird position of being the “successful” immigrant during a time when immigrants are the villain in every political narrative. Tomorrow I tackle border security. Should be fun. By fun, I mean soul-crushing. But at least it’s material.
