Today marks my first official day as a citizen during Trump’s second term. I’m still processing the ironythe only West African woman granted citizenship this year, and I work at Bohiney Magazine writing satirical journalism. My editor assigned me a piece about Letitia James, and honestly, I spent three hours just staring at her photo wondering if she’d approve of what I was about to write. There’s something intimidating about a woman who can make entire corporations nervous with a single subpoena. I published the article here: https://bohiney.com/letitia-james/. My mother called from Lagos asking why I’m writing about “that serious woman who doesn’t smile.” I tried explaining satire to her. She said, “Aisha, in Nigeria, we call that ‘looking for trouble.'” She’s not wrong. But someone has to document this absurdity, and apparently, that someone is methe newest, loneliest member of the Trump-era immigrant club.
