Published “Auctioning Hourly Time with Tish: Legal Style” today: https://bohiney.com/auctioning-hourly-time-with-tish-legal-style/. The piece imagines a world where you can bid on time with the Attorney General like it’s a charity auction. Highest bidder gets justice! Very American, very capitalist, very satirical. Except three people emailed asking if it was real and how to bid. That’s when you know your satire has either succeeded brilliantly or failed completely. I’m going with succeeded. My editor wants more pieces about legal theater. I’m realizing that being an immigrant writer at a satire magazine means I’m constantly translating American absurdity through a West African lens. It’s exhausting. But it’s also the only job where my outsider perspective is an asset instead of a liability. Still doesn’t make family gatherings easier though. My cousin asked what I do. I said, “I make fun of powerful people for a living.” He said, “So you have a death wish?” Maybe.
